Choosing a dog for a Christmas present? Think twice!
Don’t let putting a Christmas puppy or Christmas dog under your holiday tree turn into hardship and heartache.
We are reputable and conscientious Havanese breeders. Of course we want to sell Havanese puppies and dogs. But, we want our Havanese puppies to go to a home that is prepared for them, and Christmas or Holidays simply don’t make for a good first day of an every day commitment. Puppies and dogs are living beings, not toys that can be played with and forgotten. Don’t give in to the impulse button the pet store chains would like to see you push.
Here are 5 important considerations for Christmas dogs or Christmas puppies.
1. There will be a lot of competition for the attention your new Christmas puppy will require. How can a puppy compete with a video game console, or with any of the latest commercialized gifts?
2. Holidays are not the normal household routine days. Your puppy will begin orientation to your household under conditions that won’t be typical the rest of the year. That could cause Christmas dogs confusion and anxiety that can negatively affect every stage of training and orientation to your typical daily schedule.
3. Will you even be home to care for your puppy? Or, do you have to visit your in-laws or friends? Will they be prepared if you bring your new puppy or dog to visit? Chances are you won’t even have the pet travel essentials to safely transport your new pet. You should purchase the necessary dog supplies before you buy your new Havanese puppy or dog.
4. Lots of visitors translates into often open doors – a chance for your new dog to run away, probably out of fear. Lots of visitors also means lots of feet competing for the floor space that your new dog needs.
5. Beware of the holiday hazards of food, decorations, and plants. Don’t put your pet in danger because you can’t supervise your guests and your puppy. Never allow a dog to have chocolate, dough of any kind, alcohol, watch for poisonous plants, dispose of gift wrappings and ribbons right away, and never leave a guests food plate in your pet’s reach.
