As mentioned earlier, you will need pet shampoo with the proper pH balance. Completely soak their hair and shampoo. Rinse thoroughly. You will also need to treat the coat with conditioner to keep the hair from drying out and becoming tangled, rough or brittle. Towel him semi-dry then blow dry to finish.
When brushing your Havanese, you will need a slicker brush and a comb. Brush the body first, then do the legs and save the face for last. You might want to use a tangle free conditioner to make grooming your Havanese easier. Havanese do have tangles that you must work on getting out.
You should groom your havanese daily to keep your havanese coat in good shape. You should trim around their paws. If you prefer, trim around their belly and between their back legs, this will help keep them from peeing on themselves.
For eye cleaning you’ll need a soft cloth or some cotton balls and warm water. For ear cleaning you’ll need a soft cloth and warm water. To pluck hair from your dog’s ears you’ll need some tweezers or a hemostat. The nails require pet nail clippers and a regular nail file for smoothing rough edges.
To keep your pet’s teeth clean and to protect them from decay, you can use a Q-tip and brush them every 2 weeks or so with a properly sized pet tooth brush (ask your vet if in doubt) and pet toothpaste. Do not use human toothpaste. You don’t swallow the stuff and your dog doesn’t need to either. Havanese care means using products meant for dogs, not humans. In a pinch you can cleanse your dog’s teeth by dipping your finger in garlic water and rubbing it across his teeth.
